the moth

“who gives paper insects as gifts?”

the moth was the second
of three compositions
(the butterfly, the moth
and the dragonfly)
made as gifts.

its development
reflects lessons learned
while making the butterfly.

source ideas

i don’t think i can look at another butterfly.

exploring different layering approaches to the wing structure might be interesting.

what happens when i lean into inferring complexity?

challenges

still coming to grips with visualizing the stacking and interaction of the layers, though my eye is quickly developing.

i am overcorrecting, and now the contours and shapes feel too simple for what i want.

releases

accepting that things don’t have to line up perfectly.

playing with the (near) alignment of similarly shaped contours simulates intricacy.

the design process is going much more smoothly.

current version
dropping superfluous outline layer to let the negative space speak.

exploring the composition in both color and monochrome, with the monochrome (again) often better yielding a more satisfying result.
