the cats

“…i’m more an insect dude.”

…but agustí’s ask
was appealing:

layered piece. cat theme.
ginger. black.

intended as a gift
for his then-fiancé
(now husband), jordi.

source ideas

cats know how to be entirely self-contained until they don’t. they live in a rhythm of touch, tangle and retreat.

jordi has an academic background in east asian studies. both agustí and jordi appreciate japanese/korean design.

my kintsugi idea felt like a fit, though i didn’t have an approach in mind.

white, ginger and black obviously. gold if it made sense.

challenges

cats intertwined fell flat. not enough movement. tails? paws?

aligning the patterns sucks the life out of it. looked like wrapping paper.

“paper kintsugi” doesn’t convey the intended mood. too much restoration. scratches?

releases

one set of paws and scratches.

liberate the patterns. let them create space and rhythm.

scratches forming a very subtle heart.

the gold flakes drifting up from the bottom layer over time are nice
